Maximo mastered: Stena Drilling and Cohesive taking the win at MaximoWorld.
Maximo mastered: Stena and Cohesive taking the win at MaximoWorld.

Stena Drilling, the leading independent drilling contractor, and Cohesive, part of Bentley Systems, Incorporated, have secured a prestigious award for their work enhancing management of Stena’s fleet using IBM’s Maximo Application Suite (MAS).

The ‘best connected workforce’ award was presented at the MaximoWorld 2025 conference in Phoenix, Arizona. It recognized the successful upgrade to MAS – the industry-leading enterprise asset management (EAM) system – on Stena Drilling’s fleet of five ultra-deep water drill ships and one semi-submersible drilling rig. The vessels, each containing over 7,000 unique pieces of equipment, are used by the oil and gas industry.

Stena Drilling and the team of EAM specialists at Cohesive, overcame multiple challenges to ensure a smooth, on-time implementation of MAS and upgrade from Maximo 7.6.1.3, with no disruptions to operations. These included the remote, offshore locations of the six vessels. It is believed to mark the first time that MAS has been used in a disconnected state in a marine environment.

Martin Eklund, Asset Performance Superintendent at Stena Drilling, said: “Landing a project of this size is all about having the correct people that both have subject matter expert knowledge and the insight of how the business is operating. Every part of the business impacted by the change needs to be part of the process and development team. With this project, we were fortunate to have an awesome team”.

Andrew Carrie, Enterprise Asset Management Director, EMEA, at Cohesive, said: “Having been personally involved with Stena Drilling since the original Maximo implementation project in 2019, I have been consistently impressed with their professionalism and commitment to asset management. The continuity of team members from both organisations has been critical to the success of the solution.”

Since ‘go live’ in April, the implementation of MAS has unlocked multiple benefits for the Stena Drilling team. These have included: increased visibility of asset management activities across the fleet, optimized maintenance and financial activities and improved reporting metrics for auditing and compliance. Reduced time ‘in the system’, instead means the team can focus on their primary roles.

Asset-intensive organizations around the globe are selecting Cohesive to help them move to MAS ahead of IBM’s removal of support for Maximo 7.6.1 in September 2025.

MAS is a single, integrated, asset management platform that uses artificial intelligence (AI), internet of things (IoT), and analytics to optimize performance and reduce operational downtime across the asset lifecycle.

Stena Drilling, part of one of the largest family-owned companies in Sweden, has worked with Cohesive since 2019 to ensure its assets are managed as effectively as possible, using Maximo to underpin its work.
