Transforming Rail Asset Visibility and Operational Control

Amey and TfW enhanced asset visibility and operational control with unified data, mobile tools, and realtime operational insight.

Amey and Transport for Wales switched to Maximo and Cohesive for a more robust EAM solution

The new streamlined system includes mobile integrations, detailed analytics, and hosting.

The Challenge

A set of railway lines in South Wales known as the “Core Valley Lines” are being upgraded and integrated into the larger South Wales Metro project.

These lines, which connect Cardiff with towns like Aberdare, Merthyr Tydfil, Treherbert, Rhymney, and Coryton, are undergoing significant transformation, including electrification and infrastructure upgrades.

The goal is to create a modern, integrated, and sustainable public transport system across the region.

The asset management teams had been using Network Rail Ellipse and JBA Systems but chose not to continue with legacy systems to support the railway system transformation.

Therefore, they needed to transition all data and workflows to a more robust solution for the future before the end of their contracts.

To support the new system, the team needed to integrate historical data, operational processes and analytics, including inspection logic and rules for providing reports, tailored to mobile technicians and engineers.

Rather than deploy and manage the system on-premise, the team decided that working with a hosting partner was the most cost-effective solution.

Our Solution

Over the course of one year, Cohesive provided comprehensive implementation services, including onboarding legacy data and provisioning the application and hosting environment. As a Maximo expert, Cohesive also provides ongoing application support, which is essential as the organization continues to expand their use of Maximo.

The Client Benefits

Transport for Wales now has greater visibility and control over asset management processes. They can provide accurate and timely metrics to leadership to support decision making and meet compliance requirements.

Additionally, the streamlined operations have increased efficiency and saved money, for example by enabling bulk purchasing of equipment from a single vendor.

As our system matures, more functionality from multiple legacy systems, paper-based processes, and bespoke applications can be onboarded. This will make our rail operations much more sustainable by improving data capture and efficiency, helping us to deliver against complex calculated KPIs and reducing total costs.
