PKP Energetyka Accelerates Move to Industry 4.0 by Consolidating Siloed Systems

The Challenge

Since 2001, PKP Energetyka S.A. has been a key player in the Polish energy market.

Stringent competition in the energy market necessitates continuous service quality and efficiency improvements. The team has been investing in digitization for many years. As part of their ongoing improvement program, PKP aimed to modernize grid asset management, focusing on improving workflow and data organization, centralization, and optimization.

They wanted to replace paper-based processes and inconsistent data storage with automation to support faster decision-making and asset lifecycle management.

With a far-flung asset network and 700+ technicians in the field, they also wanted to ensure seamless mobile communications and real-time data access. Legal requirements  dictated the need for centralized data management.

With a far-flung asset network and 700+ technicians they also wanted to ensure seamless mobile communications and real-time data access. Legal requirements dictated the need for centralized data management.

PKP Energetyka identified their most critical resources and processes for optimization and selected IBM Maximo, as their Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system. They needed a trusted partner to help them navigate the Maximo implementation, which included integrations with GIS, a mobile application, and other legacy systems.

Our Solution

Cohesive tailored the IBM Maximo AEM implementation to meet PKP’s specific requirements. The implementation focused on:

  • Automation for improved network and asset records management, maintenance, investments, and repairs
  • Centralized knowledge gathering
  • Organization of legal status data related to real estate and energy structures
  • Maintenance history and lifecycle data for network assets
  • Detailed organization of data related to the network and recipients

The Results

Implementing IBM Maximo Enterprise Asset Management System accelerated the company’s digital transformation and significantly advanced their progress towards Industry 4.0. Thanks to the IBM Maximo implementation, the team at PKP Energytka:

  • Enhanced resource management for reliability, stability, and business continuity
  • Improved asset decision-making process
  • Developed a resource management strategy
  • Effectively tracked, managed, and maintained significant network assets
  • Centralized access to maintenance and repair reports
  • Enabled real-time access to resource information
  • Increased property maintenance efficiency
  • Improved worker safety

Maintaining PKP Energetyka’s assets effectively and efficiently directly impacts the company’s financial results and is essential for their reliable operation, which benefits all Polish citizens.

The biggest challenge was the modernization of systems responsible for managing network assets. Previously, these resources were managed using the GIS system, dedicated standalone applications, and Office systems. The transition to the IBM Maximo solution is a significant change in the approach to network asset management.
