Unifying 14 Systems to Transform Utility Operations for Con Edison

Consolidating legacy systems into Maximo, improving work management, scalability, collaboration, and enabling efficient operations for over 1,500 users.

Careful Planning Helped MAS Early Adopter Con Edison Ensure a Smooth Go-Live

Con Edison pioneers early upgrade to Maximo Application Suite, ensuring secure, seamless transition without disrupting operations or service delivery

The Challenge

Going into the upgrade, Con Edison faced several challenges.

  • To meet their security policies, Con Edison required an on-premise environment for MAS, while still providing connectivity for seamless updates and patches.
  • The team needed to consider several parallel projects within Con Edison that had dependencies on Maximo and required IT resources.
  • A third-party mobile application had to be integrated with MAS and go live at the same time as the upgrade.
  • Users needed time and training to get used to the new user interface in MAS and feel confident in the new system.

Our Solution

Cohesive worked closely with Con Edison to understand their needs and ensure workflows they used in Maximo would also be available after the upgrade. If capabilities weren’t yet available in MAS, Cohesive configured workarounds so there was no disruption to IT operations or maintenance processes:

  • To meet Con Edison’s on-premise requirements, Cohesive designed an airgapped architecture with a bastion server that interacts with the utility’s internal network.
  • By leveraging Cohesive’s Data Utility (CDU) application as part of the upgrade process, data was migrated from Maximo to MAS seamlessly and security.

The Results

As a result of close collaboration and project management, the go-live for the MAS upgrade was extremely quiet.

Con Edison was able to go live with four key initiatives in the same weekend:

  • Upgrading from Maximo to MAS
  • Upgrading a separate mobile application to a new version
  • New integration between MAS and mobile application
  • Onboarding a new group of users for transmission/distribution/supply chain

With the security and stability of their system assured, Con Edison’s operations and maintenance team can do their work more effectively and the organization can focus on their core utility business.

We’ve been using Maximo for a long time. We’ve got a lot of special things about our Maximo use case that had to be done. Working with the change management lead in Cohesive, we laid the foundation for the change. Then, when we went live, it was quiet. I think it went very smoothly, because we did a good job before the go-live.
